OTAGO TEAM NAMED TO PLAY WELLINGTON IN ROUND 2

Otago Head Coach Tom Donnelly has named his side to play against Wellington Lions in the second round of the Bunnings Warehouse NPC this Saturday 12th August, 4:35pm at Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin. This home game is double header fixture, with the Otago Spirit playing North Harbour Hibiscus beforehand at 2:05pm. Tickets are available from https://orfu.flicket.co.nz/

 

Fabian Holland is set to play his 15th Blazer Game. Sam Gilbert and Sean Withy will lead as Co-Captains.

 

This match will be played for the Mike Gibson Memorial Trophy. Mike Gibson, who played 26 games for Otago between 1984 and 1986 and then 16 for Wellington in 1987 and 1988. Gibson completed a physical education degree at Otago University before moving to Wellington, where he played for Petone. He fell ill during a Wellington game against Manawatu in 1988 and was diagnosed as having leukaemia. He died at the age of 27 six months later. Gibson lived in Wellington with Andy Leslie and his wife Lesley, and it was through that association that John Leslie moved to Otago. The trophy was first played for in 1989. Otago currently holds this trophy.

 

Just a reminder that the ORFU are implementing the ticketing initiative again this year called ‘For the Love of Club’ that aims to return money directly to Clubs and Referees within the Otago province through allocating funds from every ticket sold online to an Otago NPC/FPC home game. People who purchase online either an Otago Rugby Season Membership or a Match Day ticket will be able to nominate which of Otago’s 33 Clubs or Otago Rugby Referees Association (ORRA) they wish to support.
