Editorial Girls only tackle rugby for years 5/6 and 7/8 kicked off this week for a 4 week Metro Competition. It was awesome to see so many of our young gals out there getting their tackle on. Get up to Opoho training grounds on a Monday night to check out the future of women's rugby!!! How about our NZ Under 20's side who won the 2024 Rugby Championship! NZ secured their fate in their final game against Australia U20's with a final score of 36-25 at Sunshine Coast Stadium in Queensland Australia. Special shoutout to our Otago players who were a part of the campaign, Dylan Pledger, Josh Whaanga and A-One Lolofie! Round 2 of Volunteer of the month is here, so we encourage you to put forth your local volunteer legend for a bit of extra recognition!!! We couldn't be more grateful for the contributions big and small that our volunteers gift to the province every year and we want to make sure the community know about it. ORFU Regional Development Coach Will Henry has been clocking miles around the rugby community this week, sharing his knowledge on set piece, scrums and lineouts. Holding sessions with Owaka, South Otago High School, Taieri College and John McGlashan College. It’s great to see players showing up keen to learn and improve their game!!! |
Alhambra Union Impress With Large Turnout |
Alhambra-Union Rugby Club Premier Men's team all got involved and loved the Associate Referees course on Tuesday night this week. Our Referee Education Officer Brandon Hale said it was the most engaging and fun course he has conducted. It is great to see a such a decent turn out from a premier men's team due to the serious referee shortage we are facing in 2024. We hope this will encourage other clubs to follow suit with upcoming associate referee courses. |
Club Rugby keeps on rolling this weekend! Upper Clutha Rugby Club take the Speight's Jug on the road against Matakanui Combined Rugby Football Club at the Omakau Domain on Saturday, kick off 2:30pm. In the Southern Premier Competition, Clutha Rugby Football Club visit the Clutha Valley Rugby Football Club in Clydevale, kick off 3:00pm Massive thanks to Cameron Forrest and James Bensley for refereeing the two games, Good on ya Mates. And it’s back…. Girls ONLY tackle rugby competition is up and running!! Monday night was the first of 4 x Monday night matches. So cool to see the Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 Metro girls (Currently playing in mixed rugby teams on a Saturday) come together to play as one #spiritsisters . We also welcomed some new girls to the game as they get a little taste of what tackle rugby is all about - the perfect opportunity to give tackle a go!!
